Who We Are

The TALOS Laboratory – Artificial Intelligence for the Humanities and Social Sciences (TALOS AI4SSH)

Operating under the School of Philosophy at the University of Crete, our interdisciplinary laboratory bridges the gap between advanced digital technologies and humanistic inquiry. We bring together the Departments of Philology, History and Archaeology, and Philosophy to explore the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence on the humanities and social sciences, with a strong emphasis on AI ethics.

Our Story

from Project to permanent Hub

The TALOS Lab was born from the success of the European Commission-funded TALOS ERA Chair project. Designed as the permanent institutional successor to this ambitious initiative, the Lab ensures that the project’s groundbreaking research, open datasets, and strategic vision have a lasting home. By transitioning from a time-bound research project to a permanent center of excellence, we guarantee long-term continuity for our work and cement the University of Crete’s position within the European Research Area.

Mission & Vision

a distinctive approach to AI

Our mission is to pioneer a human-centered approach to technology by integrating the critical perspectives of the humanities into AI development.
We employ a distinctive Artificial Intelligence approach by combining the generative power of AI with the logical rigor of symbolic reasoning—leveraging semantic technologies like Knowledge Graphs—we create AI representations that are scalable, sustainable, and critically, explainable. Our systems learn directly from scholar annotations, actively enhancing the semantic layer of Linked Open Data infrastructure for the humanities and social sciences.
